Technical Information
Ammonium Bicarbonate

FORMULA:                                            NH4-HCO3

CAS NUMBER:                                      1066-33-7

MOLECULAR WEIGHT:                      79.06

DESCRIPTION:

Ammonium bicarbonate is a white powder with a faint ammoniacal odor.  At room temperature it volatilizes slowly, it decomposes at temperatures above 59wC; this also applies to its solutions in water, concentrated ammonia, and in carbon dioxide and water. The preparation of aqueous Ammonium bicarbonate solutions is accompanied by a drop in temperature.  The solutions are slightly alkaline. The concentrations of saturated aqueous solutions at various temperatures are listed in the table below:

TEMPERATURE wC:            NH4HCO3 CONCENTRATION, % Wt.:

              0                                                        10.6

             10                                                       13.9

             20                                                       17.8

             30                                                       22.1

             40                                                       26.8

             50                                                       31.6

Ammonium bicarbonate meets the purity requirements set forth in the Food Chemical Codex.  It is available with 0.5 maximum magnesium carbonate as an anti-caking agent.  Ammonium bicarbonate reacts with acids to yield gaseous carbon dioxide and with alkalis to yield gaseous ammonia.  Ammonium bicarbonate is corrosive to nickel, copper and many of their alloys.  Stainless steel, aluminum, glass, ceramics, rubber, and plastics are resistant to attack.

APPLICATIONS:

Ammonium bicarbonate is used as a leavening agent in baking dry flat cakes, e.g., biscuits and cookies.  Ammonium bicarbonate also has a wide range of applications in industries including pharmaceuticals, leather processing, mining, water treatment, specialty resins, and polymers.

PACKAGING:

Available in 55 lb. bags or 300 lb. drums.

STORAGE & HANDLING:

Ammonium bicarbonate can be kept for some months without caking in a cool, dry place.  Storage at higher temperatures may affect the free-flowing properties of Ammonium bicarbonate, but will not affect the chemical composition of the product efficacy.  Ammonium bicarbonate should not be stored or transported with nitrates, e.g., sodium nitrate, as a violent reaction may occur.  Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet.
